Climate Education: Building a Better Future

According to an April 2019 survey conducted by NPR, a significant majority of parents (over 80%) throughout the United States expressed their support for incorporating climate change education in schools. Likewise, a substantial proportion of teachers (86%) believed that teaching about climate change should be included in their curriculum. This demonstrates a common interest among teachers, parents, and students regarding the importance of climate literacy.
Engaging learning methods: To make climate education meaningful, it is essential to employ methods that captivate students' attention and cater to their individual interests. This may involve hands-on activities, interactive discussions, multimedia resources, and real-life examples, tailoring the learning experience to be relevant and relatable.
Inclusive learning opportunities: UNESCO warns that current education systems inadequately address the climate crisis. Only 53% of national curricula in 100 countries mention climate change, often with low priority. UNESCO's survey reveals less than 40% of teachers feel confident teaching climate severity, while over a quarter find suitable pedagogies to be unfamiliar to them. With 737 million students affected by school closures, UNESCO, along with the UK and Italy, will organize the Together for Tomorrow: Education and Climate Action summit at COP26.
